Um Strom zu sparen und Ventilatorgeräusche zu verringern, kann man bei den meisten neueren Prozessoren die Taktung drosseln, wenn gerade im Leerlauf keine Leistung benötigt wird. Unter Ubuntu Linux holt man sich dafür folgende Pakete als Root per apt-get install:

• powernowd
• sysfsutils

Nun folgende Kernel Module als Root per modprobe laden und für das automatische Starten beim Bootvorgang in die Datei /etc/modules eintragen:

• cpufreq-userspace
• p4-clockmod

In Datei /etc/default/powernowd, die ggf. noch angelegt werden muss, kann man die Zeile OPTIONS="-q -m 1" einstellen, um den Modus der Skalierung festzulegen.

Mein P4-M 2.2GHz skaliert so im Leerlauf bis auf 275 MHz runter. Um einen höheren Mindestwert anzugeben, fügt man in der Datei /etc/sysfs.conf die folgenden Zeilen ein (im Beispiel 825 MHz):

devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor = userspace
devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_min_freq = 825000

Die zulässigen Frequenzen kann man aus folgender Datei erfahren:

/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_available_frequencies

Mit update-rc.d powernowd defaults kriegt man den Daemon dazu, automatisch zu starten, falls er das nicht schon tut. Nachdem mein Samba Server plötzlich interne Links auf andere Partitionen nicht mehr auflöste, und ich somit mit meinem favorisierten Musik Player (Banshee) meine Musik nicht mehr hören konnte, musste ich mir eine Alternative suchen.

Ich hab mal was auf PGO gelesen, wo es um ein kleines Programm ging, das speziell für die interne Verteilung von Musik zuständig ist (Tangerine). Das verwendete Protokoll ist hierfür nicht SMB (wie bei Windows Shares oder Samba Servern, siehe oben), sondern das von Apple iTunes eingeführte Digital Audio Access Protocol, kurz DAAP. Das wird auch von Banshee als Client unterstützt (nur eben noch das Banshee-daap Paket aus dem Repos nachinstallieren).

Da es Tangerine leider nicht in einem Ubuntu Repository oder als DEB Archiv gab, musste ich mich nach nem anderen Server umgucken. Und siehe da, der Multi-Threaded DAAP Daemon war zur Stelle. Einfachste Installation nach Anleitung, Banshee gestartet, und nach kurzem Datenaustausch war mein Server als Musik Quelle in Banshee.

Leider ist die Banshee Version, die bei Ubuntu 6.06 dabei ist, irgendwie nicht so stabil, will sagen, es stürzt etwas zu oft ab. Deshalb musste ich doch wieder zurück zu Rhythmbox, das bei Gnome ja eh schon dabei ist, und es unterstützt DAAP offensichtlich auch ohne Zusatzpaket.

Im Gegensatz zu Banshee zeigt es als Unterknoten zum Musik Server sogar noch die sogenannten Smart Playlists, die man über eine Konfigurationsdatei beim Server anlegen bzw. ändern kann. Als Beispiel ist eine Playlist namens 60’s Music dabei, welche alle Lieder zusammenfasst, deren ID3 Tag “Year” die Werte zwischen 1960 und 1970 beinhalten. Schicke Sache. Ich hab mir eine Playlist namens Jazz erzeugt. Der Syntax:

Eben hab ich rausgefunden, dass mt-daapd jetzt wohl unter dem neuen Namen Firefly Media Server weiterentwickelt wird.

Und ausserdem noch Weltmeister der Herzen… und der kleine Weltmeister des Turniers.

Trotz kurzfristiger Niedergeschlagenheit der Nation durch die beiden glücklichen italienischen Treffer in den letzten Minuten vor dem Elfmeterschiessen, das Italien mit Sicherheit nach Stuttgart geschickt hätte, ist die Stimmung nun wieder auf tollem Niveau.

At work I finally got a new PC. My previous one was over 4 years old, although it still worked ok. Since I have to learn the JAVA aspects of SAP Netweaver, I needed the SAP Netweaver Developer Studio (which is based on Eclipse) plus the corresponding Netweaver server installed locally. Dont ask why the server isnt running centrally, I dont understand it either. So I needed as few as 2.5 GB RAM for this beast. The new machine is an IBM ThinkCentre A52 (3.0 GHz). Pretty nice.

Wir hatten damals Donkey Kong II, dessen Gehäuse fast gleich aussah, wie das des DS Lite. Allerdings in Braun und mit Knopfzellen statt Lithium-Ionen-Akkus. Unter anderen hatten wir auch mal Oil Panic von einem Freund ausgeliehen.

• Download the Flight CD 2 Iso and install it

After first reboot the root file system is not found on /dev/sda1 (no joy)

• Download the Browser Appliance and install that
• Smooth installation
• Install gedit via System -> Administration -> Synaptic (password is “vmware”)
• sudo gedit /etc/apt/source.list and replace all “breezy” with “dapper”, comment out the backports lines
• run System -> Administration -> Update Manager -> Reload
• Click the Install button and see the updates fly by

[Update]

• move /etc/X11/xorg.conf to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak
• move /etc/X11/xorg.conf.Before* to /etc/X11/xorg.conf
• edit the xorg.conf file and comment out the GLCore line
• do a ln -s /usr/bin/Xorg /usr/X11R6/bin/Xorg
• call /etc/init.d/gdm restart and enter Gnome 2.13.3

As of the latest update, the same error as described above (root file system is not found on /dev/sda1) appears. How can this be fixed?
